WHO Europe / HBSCThe most-cited quantitative summary is a 2022 dose-response meta-analysis in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, pooling 26 studies and 55,340 adolescents. Higher social media time was associated with 1.6 times the odds of depressive symptoms, the relationship was roughly linear — about 13% higher risk per additional daily hour — and it was markedly stronger for girls (OR 1.72) than boys (OR 1.20). US federal data points the same direction: CDC analysis found teens reporting four or more daily hours of screen time had substantially elevated rates of anxiety and depression symptoms compared with lighter users.
Beyond duration, the pattern of use appears to matter more. WHO Europe's Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study tracks problematic use — loss of control, withdrawal symptoms, neglected activities — and found it rising from 7% of adolescents in 2018 to 11% in 2022, higher among girls (13%) than boys (9%). A 2025 JAMA study similarly found that addictive patterns of screen use predicted worse youth mental health outcomes better than total hours did.
Sleep: the mechanism with the strongest evidence
If the field agrees on one causal pathway, it is sleep. Screens displace it, delay it and degrade it — and poor sleep is one of the best-established drivers of poor mental health. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine reports 38% of adults say they sleep worse because of bedtime screen use, rising to 46% among under-25s. A large 2025 Norwegian study of students found each additional hour of screen use in bed was associated with 59% higher odds of insomnia symptoms and about 24 minutes less sleep, and a 2024 systematic review in BMC Medicine linked each extra hour of nighttime use to 15–25 minutes of lost sleep across 30+ studies. Around two-thirds of teens report losing sleep to late-night phone or internet use.
Where researchers genuinely disagree
Honesty requires presenting the other side of this literature, because it is substantial. Most studies are cross-sectional, so causation plausibly runs both ways: struggling teens may retreat to screens as much as screens create struggle. Several large-dataset analyses have found the average association between digital technology use and adolescent wellbeing to be small. And a 2025 study in Nature found that teens who merely believe they are addicted to social media have a harder time moderating their use — a reason to be careful with the language of addiction itself.
The synthesis most researchers on both sides can live with: total screen time is a weak predictor of mental health; compulsive use, passive consumption, social comparison content, displaced sleep and displaced in-person connection are much stronger ones. Which is another way of saying the thing worth measuring was never the hours — it's what fills them.
